Why should anybody discuss something with a bunch of bigots? The people who call Christians "fundies" obviuosly already have their minds made up.
JeffT, I don't know who called Christians "fundies," at least not in this thread. I certainly did not; however, I must point out that the term 'fundamentalist' applies just as well to extremist Muslims as to extremist Christians. Those who believe a country should be a theocracy fit into that extremist category, in my estimation, but not all Christians think or act this way.
No personal offense was intended, but if the shoe fits, feel free to wear it. In answer to your question, why argue with a bunch of bigots? Because someone rational cares enough to be bothered with rational answers, and wishes to model more desirable and humane attitudes for the children of all the bigots. After all, modeling is important to children, and the children of bigots could use a variety of better role models. -
Nobel-winning author claims she "couldn't care less" . . .
by Madame Quixote inbut then again, if it encourages more people to read her books, that would be nice she says.
well, doris lessing, one of my favorite writers has won a nobel for literature - finally - and now she's so old and loopy, she tells the press, 'whoopdy doo.
she's always been a bit eccentric.. she's a truly good writer.

Well, Doris Lessing, one of my favorite writers has won a Nobel for literature - finally - and now she's so old and loopy, she tells the press, 'whoopdy doo.'
Oh well. She's always been a bit eccentric.
She's a truly good writer. Hopefully, her odd personality won't turn off future readers.
If you ever have the chance to read anything she's written, I highly recommend doing so.
I read some of her book, African Laughter, a few years back while putting together part of a class project website. African Laughter was beautiful and poignant, and I hope it is not out of print. Fifth Child, a novel, was fascinating, and the famous shortstory, "The Old Chief Mshlanga," was very thought-provoking and vivid.
Although Ms. Lessing comes across as quite a cranky person, her writing is a window into the heart of a truly compassionate, life-affirming, flawed, yet gifted human being.
Congratulations, Ms. Lessing, you ole feminist, you!

I'm celebrating the season and honoring rational, caring family and friends this year.
A friend who passed away in July would be celebrating his birthday on 12/23, so it will be a somber time.
We will have a good time, but it will be a challenge and I'm not interested in contributing to the commercialization of a religious holiday, given the circumstances.
I will take time to honor and celebrate the life and passing of dear friends and enjoy some good food, company, and entertainment.

Homesick for the City by the Bay
by mrsjones5 init was bad enough watching monk (with quite a bit shot in oakland which doesn't help either) and mythbusters (they always show the sf skyline in the background) but the new shows on tv aren't helping, journeyman and now women's murder club coming up next, all set in san francisco.
i'm flying out to california on the 24th and hopefully i'll be able to visit the bay area, i'll be staying near sacramento.
can't wait.. josie.

It seems like such a dreamy place; you made me homesick for it and I've never been there! Have a great time and bring us some pictures if you can!

Hi from a newbie here
by tere1998 ini joined this site about a week ago and have enjoyed reading all the posts and chatter.
i was raised in the jws, baptized at 17 (didn't know any better) but once i got married and had a baby, i just didn't have enough time to go to all the meetings during the week.
we got the "shepherding calls" and pretty much were looked down on for not going to all the meetings.

Public talks could end if they have to sell all the kingdom hells due to sex abuse lawsuits - ('persecution' in JWspeak).
Sorry if someone already touched on this. I don't have
timeinclination to read a 7-page thread on a rumor that I hope is true! -

The Most Insane Thing Ever Printed by the Watchtower?
by Leolaia ini found this while perusing through old golden ages at the new york public library.
it is so patently ridiculous and offensive, i thought i'd just post the thing without comment.

"Little Women" don't make "great wars," but great injustice often does. And many "little people" are there to help galvanize the cause against such injustice.

Insightful and anything but simplistic, regarding the relation of Beecher-Stowe to Lincoln and how her writing helped to "galvanize" the anti-slavery cause:
